[Cross-posted from the Vision Riders Blog]

After completing Another Star, I thought about expanding my fake "emulator" engine that the game ran on, and doing another project. I'd like to add some of the features that Another Star is missing, such as actual palette swapping for example.

Another thing I thought about adding was real-time sound. In Another Star, all the music and sound effects are prerendered and then played back, but this past week I toyed around with programming a six-channel FM synthesizer from scratch. Thus, not only graphics, but audio would also be emulated. Behold!

(The screenshot is a test mockup, although it belongs to the same game idea/project.)

The programming is not particularly efficient at the moment. If you listen closely, you can hear the tempo wobble from time to time as my computer struggles to render just five of the six audio channels. Still, I thought it was quite an accomplishment, reading countless articles online about how sound and FM synthesis works, and then applying it to an actual, working program over the course of a week. I honestly didn't understand much about sound waves work until now.

That said, I'm not sure if there's much use for it. The only real appeal is that it's rendering audio in real time. There's not really any reason not to use audio files for music and sound effects in games. So, in the end, this week was probably nothing more than a waste of time.

Excuse me for a moment while I go postal:

Why must so many people wallow in their ignorance? The NES did not use MIDI music. The SNES did not use MIDI music. The Genesis did not use MIDI music. The Game Boy did not use MIDI music. The Nintendo 64 did not use MIDI music. Do yourselves a favor and learn what MIDI actually is. Hint, hint: it has nothing to do with quality.

The other day I came across some idiot's comment on YouTube concerning an actual orchestrated version of One Winged Angel. He said it sounded like a MIDI and that it didn't compare at all to the original. Which is actually kinda hilarious since the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack actually was MIDI (sans the choir in One Winged Angel, which caused the dev team many sleepless nights to make it work right with the MIDI instruments).

The original Soul Calibur soundtrack on iTunes for eight bucks? That's not too bad. Of course, I just spent fifty dollars on the Metroid Prime collector's edition package so any further additions to my music collection will just have to wait. I didn't really want the Metroid Prime collector's edition that much, but since they up and decided "lol, let's stop printing it all of a sudden" I feared a repeat of Tales of Vesperia. T_T

Yay! Mah signed copy of the Aquaria soundtrack finally came in. :3

The little Marian postcard thing that came with it is a bit bent at the end, but that's easily forgivable. The production job on this thing is very good.

Wait, wait, wait, hold the presses! Final Fantasy XIII will have a different theme song, done by Leona Lewis, for the NA release?

You idiots. Stop changing music! It's not even a song written for the game! Gah! Square Enix, you used to be the one to avert this more often than not!

After having played many hours into it, I'm not sure I'm so keen on the DS version of Final Fantasy IV's battle theme. It's certainly not a bad rendition in and of itself, I just think that the level of the bass in the song renders the other instruments too mixed into each other, so that in turn you don't notice them as much and it ends up losing a lot of the power of the original. This is especially a shame because the battle theme is easily one of the best tracks the original had to offer. Thankfully, the majority of the soundtrack doesn't suffer such a fate. In fact, I'd venture a few--off the top of my head, the Fabul theme and "A Long Way to Go"--so vastly superior to their originals in every conceivable way that listening to the original makes me cry tears. This, of course, creates an endless spiral in which the fact that these tracks are so awesomely incredible but the main battle theme isn't leads to the verge of a complete mental breakdown.

Dissidia's soundtrack can't hold a candle to the one for Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon on the Wii. My goodness, award this arranger the Nobel prize right away!

Some Highlights:
Airship Theme (The Big Whale from FFIV)
Together Forever (The Day Will Come from FFV)
Pop-Up Duel (Battle Theme from FFII)
Leviathan Battle (Four Fiends Battle from FFIV)
Battle de Chocobo

Wait a minute, Yasunori Mitsuda's score in the upcoming Sands of Destruction is being completely replaced for the US release? Didn't we stop doing this crap like... a decade ago. -_-

Not that I'm really interested in the game--it's by the same people who cursed the world with Luminous Arc after all--but I really hope this is a miscommunication somewhere along the line. If you want a completely different game for the US audience, then make a completely different game.

I still get a kick out of the fact that the Augie's Great Municiple Band track that plays during the parade at the very end of Episode I is just the Emperor's Theme played in a major key and an upbeat tempo.

1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and link/upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

Oh, memes. How I hate and loathe you in equal parts, and yet I agree to your silly demands anyway. In any case, I'm linking to YouTube videos, not MP3s, so "meh" to you. "Meh" to you all. Also, I'm doing six songs because I feel like it. And because I can. It's my journal and you can't stop me! >:o

---"R" from Jyrraeth---

Refill -Relical Model- - Tales of Symphonia - Motoi Sakuraba
Refill is Raine's original Japanese name. This is the song that plays whenever she sees some historical artifact or something and goes crazy. Oh, Raine, you are so silly. Now give Lloyd and Genis what for! :D

The Ring Goes South - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Howard Shore
Easily one of the best tracks in the movie. Love both the Shire and the Fellowship's leitmotifs in this piece.

R*O*C*K*S - Naruto - Hound Dog
The first opening to the Naruto anime series. Fell in love with the song instantly. Don't you wanna rocks? (Whatever that means.)

Rowdy Rumble - Kingdom Hearts II - Yoko Shimomura
The battle theme whenever you fight Pete, among others. I don't know, it just fits.

The Royal City of Light - Tales of the Abyss - Motoi Sakuraba
The theme for Baticul, the capital of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear in Tales of the Abyss. Nice, majestic track for a captial city.

Rewrite - Full Metal Alchemist (First Series) - Asian Kung-Fu Generation
I honestly don't care for the manga, but the original Full Metal Alchemist anime is very much a contender for the title of "Best Localization Ever". This is my favorite opening of the four, although the chorus leans a bit further towards "I AM YELLING WHILE I AM SINGING" than I care for.
